I'd been alternating between looking at that photograph and staring out the kitchen window towards the middle school north of me. For a half hour, moms and dads had been bidding drive-by farewells through the passenger windows of their F-150's and minivans. Boys and girls teemed in front of the building. Little little-people shrieks tumbled through the open window near my front door. The lawn sprinklers had just come on. I saw, through the God-lit sheet of water, two tiny girls with sparkling black hair dart, laughing. They stopped, looked at each other for a moment, and resumed a slow walk to the school.
All those innocent, bright-eyed, eager babies bathing in the romantic light of a fall morning lining up to be brainwashed.... "I pledge allegiance, to the flag, of the United States of America...."
