HONEYMOON TRIP (Day 9) Marin Headlands

Not too many words for this one. This is one of my favorite views. Weather was perfect. Wendy had one of her perfect coincidental moments when she was trying to determine the identity of a particular bird ... a birdwatcher fellow just happened to walk up, identify it for her, and also treat us to some bird calls.

Before WWII, this gun emplacement was built for a 16 inch gun with a range of 7 miles to protect the harbor. It was never armed, since the possibility of an attack by 1943 seemed impossible due to the success of the Pacific war. For some reason, I just really get a kick out of these old structures. The echo inside the tunnel was stunning.

More later. Internet is extremely slow here at the Quality Inn in Fort Bragg. Heading to the redwoods now!!!

Breakfast came w/ the room... you had choices in the restaurant... TW's, right? 2 huge cakes & eggs (greasy & funny tasting), oatmeal & toast and some other starch heavy deal -- no meat, ok? coffee or hot (or cold, specified) tea and the "waitress" (totally oldschool) called me honey about 70 times -- looked straight into my eyes when she talked and it made me want to just curl up in her lap... such a mommy she was.

See... the shit happens when you sit at the BAR. One of the other servers, this Latino guy (the whole kitchen was Latino, which was as much color as was in this town), just talked & talked & talked about how amazing Swiss watches were... how it's not like everything else made today with plastic and machined parts and machine assembled. He couldn't stop talking about those damn watches and how much he wished he could have one. He was as passionate about them as any paragraph in a Gabriel Marquez novel. Dammit ... I love people. Seriously. Everyone's got their angle.

My bet is that K's adventure was sexual in nature. Sort of like my daughter's story involving the Eiffel Tower.
